The management of risk is too often approached as a checklist compliance task.  Not utilizing appropriate technology, data and good strategies to the fullest extent is poor risk management practice. It causes resources to be misdirected towards redundant activities or towards addressing events that are unlikely to occur.

Participants in this session will come away with (i) an understanding that technology, data, and well-formed  strategies are useful beyond mere compliance, and (ii) a primer in utilizing an optimized combination of technology, data and good strategies for enabling their organizations to maintain  efficient and effective food safety and quality assurance systems while operating at each nexus where risk meets opportunity.

The food supply chain is continuously expanding and becoming more complex, leading to increased food safety and fraud risks as well as continuity and social responsibility threats around the world. Risks such as adulteration, mislabeling, counterfeiting, and contamination pose a huge threat to the livelihood of an organization as well as its customers. As the demand for traceability and quality continue to increase, food sector organizations must understand where their vulnerabilities are to ensure the protection of their customers and creditability of their goods.

As modern day supply chain networks increasingly span continents and become more complex, the ability to quantify and mitigate supply chain risks throughout the procurement, manufacturing, transportation and sales lifecycle is paramount. Organizations need to identify the critical risks to minimize disruption and help protect global operational, financial and reputational exposures.

Data-driven Supply Chains

The food supply chain is global and complex. Data needed to ensure food safety, compliance and quality comes from many sources and many formats across a myriad of organizations. Traceability is important, but a more complete view (i.e., a digital twin) is needed. A digital twin focuses not only on chain of custody, but also what is in it and what has been done to it, starting from raw ingredients. Technology is an enabler, not a panacea. Ultimately, data, its veracity and secure accessibility are drivers to ensuring food we grow, process, sell and eat is safe. This session will focus on a food’s digital twin and its lifecycle in a complex supply chain.
